1) Mercy - Sean x Ye x 2 Chainz x Pusha
Every year we have a transcendent song that personifies what happened in hip hop over the past 12 months. Last time I did this list, I chose Freaks and Geeks to be that song; it ushered in a new type of rapper, that, coupled with the song’s clever wordplay and increasingly uncommon ‘no chorus’ structure, made it unique.
So what was that definitive song of 2012? To me, it was by far and away Mercy.
The song has permeated our culture to the point where it has become ubiquitous in so many ways. To quickly rattle off some things this song did: it brought to fruition the ‘50 guest features’ song format that artists like DJ Khaled have butchered for so long and Odd Future had almost perfected, it brought 2 Chainz to relevance and dude is everywhere now, it paired not just random artists but the most relevant rappers of the past year onto the same song and this is all without mentioning the video. In my opinion, this song will become synonymous with 2012.
Have a great new years everyone.
3) Clique - Sean x Ye x Jay
Top 50 2k12: 24/25
24) I Don’t like Remix - Everyone
25) Get It In - iamsu!
You’ve begged (no you haven’t), you’ve pleaded (probably not) and clamored for (definitely not) another top 50 songs of the year list and this year, I will give the people what they want.
My previous list culminated in Childish Gambino’s Freaks and Geeks and I can honestly say I have no idea what songs will be in my top 10. Quick rundown of this list:
1) It’s my top 50, so it will be all hip hop and semi-mainstream or bay area heavy.
2) I’ll keep the text to a minimum so we can focus on the music.
3) Final song will be posted mid-late December.
So in a year where Kanye told us about his clique, Kid Ink had the time of his life and the world was introduced to a young southern gentleman named 2 Chainz there is definitely a ton of material for a top 50 list. Another great year for hip-hop and we’ve seen major trends for the future. So whether you’re tryin to function or have a condo around your neck, I hope you’ll enjoy this list.
And with that I’ll keep the text to a minimum for the rest of the list.
Live, Love, A$AP and I’ll catch everyone soon with the first songs.
Clique - Big Sean x Kanye x Jay
New God Flow - Kanye x Pusha T
Pride N Joy - Fat Joe x Kanye x More
I Don’t Like - CHief Keef x Kanye x Big Sean x Jada
